The weather may be dreary and gray outside, but inside flowers and happy colors made an appearance last week.

Flowers and yellow chicks bobbed cheerfully amid smiles, applause and laughter at the Cloquet VFW last Wednesday.

About 50 guests (and one little dog) at the regular senior dance excitedly participated or watched the judging of an Easter hat contest. There was a variety of hats to admire: tall striped Dr. Suess-inspired hats, Easter bonnets trimmed with flowers and little yellow chicks, and one hat that even sported bright twinkling green lights.

After careful consideration by the guest judges, the participants were invited to strut their stuff on the "catwalk" between the row of tables so everyone could admire their ensemble.

Third place was awarded to Theresa Bogacki, who wore a hat decorated with gold ribbon, pink flowers and twinkle lights; second prize went to Teresa Funk with her white and yellow flowers and chicks peeping over the top, complete with a pink ribbon bow under her chin to keep the hat in place. A couple, Jim and Sharon Fairchild, took first place. Sharon showed off her hat decorated with bright red and purple flowers, and her husband as her large accessory. Jim went the extra step with festive knee socks to add to his huge colorful clown tie and spotted cow hat. He gave an extra fancy step as he stopped and struck a pose on the catwalk, much to the amusement of the judges.
