FDLTCC hosts Fine Arts Week

Author Brian Lee Young will read from his book "Healer of the Water Monster' on Wednesday, April 13, and the college will host a release party for "The Thunderbird Review" on Thursday, April 14.

CLOQUET — Fond du Lac Tribal and Community College will host Brian Lee Young (Navajo), author of "Healer of the Water Monster," as part of its 2022 Fine Arts Week.

The free event will feature a reading and book signing by Young on Wednesday, April 13, at 7 p.m. in the Ruth A. Myers Library or via Zoom, according to a news release sent by the college.

Young is a winner of the American Indian Youth Literature Award for Best Middle Grade Novel. His thrilling adventure, "Healer of the Water Monster," explores Navajo cosmology and climate change as the book’s hero, 11-year-old Nathan, discovers the healing power of courage, compassion and ceremony, the news release said.

"This is not just a book for kids. People of all ages will love it!” said FDLTCC English faculty member and author, Rain Newcomb. "The English Department is so excited to give our students the opportunity to meet Brian Young and see how writing can change the world.”

The 2022 Fine Arts Week also includes a release party for "The Thunderbird Review" on Thursday, April 14, at 7 p.m. in the Ruth A. Myers Library, the news release said. The event will celebrate the release of the 10th anniversary edition of the inclusive journal based out of FDLTCC.

“'The Thunderbird Review' seeks to fulfill FDLTCC's mission to be a union of cultures through inclusivity,” said FDLTCC English faculty member and author Darci Schummer. “It provides an important opportunity for students at FDLTCC to share their creative work with the community."
