The ongoing coronavirus pandemic has caused the cancellation of the Carlton County Fair in Barnum.

The Carlton County Agricultural and Industrial Society Board of Directors made the announcement following its Thursday, June 11, meeting.

The board decided the fair couldn’t be held while adhering to the Minnesota Department of Health guidelines regarding social distancing and large gatherings.

“We also had many discussions on not only doing what was best for the health and safety of all those involved in the fair, but how hosting such a large event could affect our small community” the board announced on its website and Facebook page. “After a silent room, tears had by some, we decided what was in the best interest of all considering the pandemic is to cancel the Carlton County Fair for 2020.”

The announcement also noted the fairgrounds remain open for events that follow MDH and social distancing guidelines. Examples include weddings, graduation parties, camping and horse shows.

The fairgrounds will also be open for 4-H Club programming once the University of Minnesota Extension announces its guidelines.
