Carlton County residents seeking a warm meal or a volunteer opportunity Thanksgiving day can find both at Zion Lutheran Church in Cloquet.
The third annual dinner — sponsored by members of Chapter 18 of Disabled American Veterans and auxiliary — will offer a traditional sit-down meal at Zion as well as deliveries to homebound residents.
The DAV began organizing and hosting the meal in 2017 after the College of St. Scholastica chose to consolidate its longtime turkey day operations into one large meal at the Duluth Entertainment Convention Center. While meals could still be delivered to Carlton County residents, no meal was available in the area.
Raffy Johnson, a UPS driver and DAV member, previously delivered meals for the DECC dinner on Thanksgiving, but was concerned about the lack of a local community meal in Carlton County following the consolidation to one site.
The sit-down meal will be served from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 28, at Zion Lutheran Church, 1000 Washington Ave., Cloquet. Delivery requests must be made by noon Wednesday, Nov. 27, by calling Zion at 218-879-4647. Call the same number to volunteer; people are needed to work as delivery drivers, cooks, servers and cleanup crew.
The meal is free and open to the public. No RSVP is necessary. Donations will be accepted, but aren't required.
