Carlton Winterfest brings community-based warmth
Carlton Winterfest schedule
- Noon-4 p.m. Mini Hook-and-Slice, indoor open family skate and concessions.
Feeling cooped-up and stir crazy during this season of unusually cold-weather streaks? Get out to Carlton Winterfest on Saturday, Feb. 9, for some winter fun at the Four Seasons Sports Complex.
To start, bring a golf club, broom, bat, hockey stick, tennis racket or whatever you can find for the second annual game of Mini Hook-and-Slice. It's like mini golf, and each of the 10 holes are sponsored by a different area business, Carlton Chamber President Shanna Wolf said.
"They have the opportunity to make their hole how they want," Wolf said. "This year, we have a people's choice award where people can vote for their favorite hole."
Registration for the event costs $5, and kids ages 8 and under can participate for free with a paid adult.
Families can also lace up for open skate during that time.Kids activities will include face painting, games with free books involved and the Zoomobile, in which a smaller amphibian or reptile joins the scene with Carlton Community Education.
Register for the 23rd annual chili cook-off, then sample the chilis after the judges.
In the evening, head over to Jay Cooke State Park for a candlelight snowshoe, hike or ski on luminary-lit trails. Hundreds of people often attend this event, Wolf said.
Then warm up at the Carlton High School for the annual bingo hosted by the Carlton Fire Department, which Wolf said saw an estimated 400 people the past two years.
"That's our big fundraiser for the year," Wolf said.
The Carlton Area Lion's Club will donate all proceeds made from bingo and Mini Hook-and-Slice to the community. The proceeds could go toward sight conservation, diabetes awareness, youth outreach or others, according to the Mini Hook-and-Slice registration page where people can pre-register. The money raised from sponsors will go toward the holiday season lighting fund.
"We encourage everybody to come from the surrounding community and further," Wolf said. "I'm definitely looking forward to it and I'm looking forward to seeing the people come out for it, too."
