Free life jackets will be available for Carlton County residents at a drive-thru event hosted by the Cloquet Area Fire District on Tuesday, June 22, from 3 to 5 p.m.

The event will be held in the parking lot at CAFD Station 2, 2779 Bike Lake Road, in collaboration with the Fond du Lac Human Services Division and Safe Kids Northeast Minnesota. According to a news release, the Fond du Lac Tribal SHIP has provided 150 life jackets for giveaway.

Life jackets will only be available to Carlton County residents 16 years old or younger, with a limit of two per household.

"With the warmer weather, families will be spending more time enjoying the lakes and rivers northern (Minnesota) offers," a news release said. "Being aware of the risks these open waters pose and following boating and swimming safety tips can keep those outings safe and fun."

Tips for swimming and boating safety:

  • Wear a U.S. Coast Guard-approved life jacket that fits properly when boating.
  • Watch children when they are in or around water.
  • Teach children how to swim — lessons are offered through Cloquet Community Education.
  • Teach children that swimming in open water is different than swimming in a pool.
  • Learn basic water rescue and CPR skills.

How to fit a life jacket:

1. Choose a U.S. Coast Guard-approved life jacket that is right for the child’s weight and water activity.

2. Fasten all zippers, straps, and buckles for a snug fit.

3. Check the fit by lifting up the shoulders of the life jacket. If the life jacket hits the child’s chin or ears, it’s too big.
