Community Calendar: Tech and Coffee, master gardener plant sale and more

Tech & Coffee, 9-11 a.m., Chickadee Coffeehouse & Deli, Barnum. Barnum Community Education hosts the free event. Community members can drop in to get help with their cell phones, e-readers, tablets, laptops, social media platforms and more. Community education staff and Nathan Rimolde from RTS will be on hand to answer questions.

Campfire Program–MN Timber Wolves, 8-8:30 p.m., Jay Cooke State Park, meet at the amphitheater behind the park office. Learn more about the wolves of Minnesota, including what their daily life is like and how they work together for pack survival. The program will have bench seating, but those who attend can bring a blanket or camp chair for comfort or social distancing.

Carlton County Master Gardener Spring Plant Sale, 9 a.m., Veteran’s Park Pavilion, 508 Cloquet Ave., Cloquet. The annual plant sale is back and will include lots of perennials, vegetable starts, bulbs and more. Plants will be available for $2, $3 and $5. Local garden experts will be on hand to answer questions. This year will feature a white elephant table and a pollinator seed packet for the first 50 customers. The sale will start at 9 a.m. and go until it’s sold out. Please be advised that plants usually sell out quickly.

Why are the Rocks Tilted? Geology Walk, 10:30-11 a.m., Jay Cooke State Park, meet at the River Inn Interpretive Center. The tilted rocks by the river have caused people to wonder and marvel at them for centuries. Join park staff on a short geology walk near the river and discover what powerful forces of the past shaped the tilted rocks. The walk is ¼ mile on a level, grassy surface. Lady’s Slipper Walk, 1-2:30 p.m., Jay Cooke State Park, meet at the River Inn Interpretive Center. This 2-mile moderate hike across the St. Louis River will lead to a scenic hillside of yellow lady’s slipper flowers.

Learn more about the silent hunters of the night and how nature built a better mousetrap in the form of an owl. Birdsong Walk, 8-9:30 a.m., Jay Cooke State Park, meet at the Visitor Center parking lot. Join the naturalist to see who’s flying through the park. The walk will be along a 1½ mile paved trail and is great for beginning birders. Binoculars will be provided.

Junior Naturalists: Monarchs are Art, 1-2 p.m., Jay Cooke State Park, meet behind the River Inn Interpretive Center. Children who attend the program will learn about the life cycle, migration and special roles of the monarch. They will also complete a creative caterpillar craft.

Health Care Fraud, Waste and Abuse Prevention class, 10-11:30 a.m. or 2-3:30 p.m., virtual. The Senior LinkAge Line will offer two classes on health care fraud, waste and abuse prevention. Attendees will learn how to detect and report potential errors, fraud and abuse; review potential fraud and scams targeting older adults; how to read a Medicare Summary Notice; learn tips to help protect their Medicare beneficiary number; and how to protect-detect-report Medicard scams and fraud. People interested can stop by anytime during the two-hour window to hear mini-talks about the rocks of the park.
