The new owners of TJ's Country Store in Mahtowa are continuing some of its traditions.

Renee and Glenn Gaffney began as the new owners April 17 after Tom Bislow, the previous owner and a well-known figure in the township, died Jan. 31.

The new owners held their first chicken swap and flea market Saturday, May 11. They plan to continue the second and fourth Saturday through the summer at TJ's Country Corner, 2751 Market St., until Labor Day weekend.

"The first chicken swap and flea market was very well-attended," Renee said. She urges customers to stop by and taste the old fashioned ice cream they recently added in keeping with the old fashioned feel of the store.

There was a variety of animals on hand at the swap, including dogs, pigs and peacocks, as well as several hatcheries and a new feedmill in the area.

The Gaffneys plan to continue the store's events if they can. Renee acknowledged Bislow didn't leave any notes about the events because they were mainstays in the community for so long. They are asking residents and vendors to help fill in some of the information to help keep them going as smoothly as possible.

The next swap and flea market is May 25 from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. The event, which coincides with Wurst Days, includes kids games, a golf tournament at 29 Pines and live music.
