The Federal Aviation Administration announced Tuesday, July 9, it awarded the Cloquet Carlton County Airport a $1.1 million Airport Improvement Program grant to rehabilitate a runway at the facility.
The grant requires a 5% match from Carlton County and the Minnesota Department of Transportation and also includes "grant assurances" that the county keep the airport in good repair — typically 20 years — after the grant is awarded.
Airport manager Quinten Anderson said work on the project will begin in late spring or early summer next year. The grant is good news because the Cloquet airport has some of the “poorest pavement in the state," he said.
Earlier this summer, a $1.5 million reconstruction project on the other runway in Cloquet was just completed in June with a cost to Carlton County of $75,000.
