Slip off your shoes, put up your feet and breathe easier: A Himalayan salt room awaits in downtown Cloquet.

According to Kari Lewis, owner of Epic Nutrition, the salt room in her shop offers health benefits for those suffering from sinus issues.

“Its called halotherapy. It’s the only one in northern Minnesota,” Lewis said. “It helps clear sinuses from allergies or colds.”

How much it helps, however, depends on the individual, she claims.

Shades of amber and pinkish-brown Himalayan salt blocks fill most of one wall. A light from behind adds a relaxing ambiance to the room as visitors recline on chairs and unplug. A fixture on the wall sends out fine particles of salt into the room. Chunks of Himalayan salt cover the floor like a shimmering beach.

“The whole floor is salt; the wall is salt,” Lewis said. “ And the room is soundproof.”

She said the room is safe for people of all ages. The room fits up to five people at a time.

“Leave your cellphones out of the room and take 45 minutes to just relax,” Lewis advised.

According to Lewis, breathing the salt helps clear out the nasal passages to improve breathing. Salt is considered an anti-inflammatory. The sessions are 45 minutes for $20 and drop-ins are welcome.

Once customers are done relaxing in the salt room, they can grab a protein shake on their way out the door. There are vegan, dairy-free and gluten-free options available. Lewis said the most popular flavors are peanut butter birthday cake and strawberry cheesecake.
