Cloquet Aldi store to open in April
The new Aldi supermarket at 131 Big Lake Road, Cloquet, is on track to open in April.
Aldi, a German grocery chain, will feature some new products in its new store along with more familiar merchandise, said Matt Lilla, vice president of Aldi's Faribault Division.
"Compared to last year, 20 percent of the Aldi product selection is new," he said. "The Aldi product expansion is the next phase of the company's aggressive, national growth and remodel plan. As part of the product expansion, Aldi is increasing its fresh food selection by 40 percent with many organic, convenient and easy-to-prepare options."
He said the Cloquet store will have a new layout and feature open ceilings, natural lighting and use environmentally friendly building materials.
Shopping at Aldi differs from the traditional American supermarket experience. Its stores' square footage is smaller than most U.S.-based chains; more than 90 percent of its products are store brands; and it doesn't offer disposable plastic or paper shopping bags.
Aldi also uses a shopping cart rental system where customers deposit a quarter into shopping carts outside the entrance, but receive the coin back when exiting the store. This keeps costs down by eliminating the need for cart attendants, according to the Aldi website.
Full-time store associate positions in Cloquet, posted on the website, start at $13.50 per hour plus benefits; shift managers start at $18 per hour.
Aldi first came to the region in 2015 with a location in Superior. It opened a store on Duluth's Miller Hill in 2017.
Aldi operates more than 1,800 stores in 35 states.
