Leadership roles change at Allete

DULUTH — Several key leadership changes are taking place at Allete Inc., an energy company with electric utilities Minnesota Power, Superior Water , Light and Power of Wisconsin. In addition, it owns Duluth's Allete Clean Energy, BNI Energy in Bismarck, North Dakota; New Energy Equity headquartered in Annapolis, Maryland; and has an 8% equity interest in the American Transmission Co.

After more than 25 years with the company, Nicole Johnson has been named president of Allete Clean Energy. In 1996, she joined Allete as an intern and was promoted to vice president of human resources in 2016. Since 2019, she served as Allete’s chief administrative officer, overseeing human resources, cyber technology services, and environmental and land management.

Johnson serves as an Allete vice president, and is on the Allete New Energy Equity and Superior Water, Light and Power boards, in addition to a new role on the Allete Clean Energy board. Her community involvement includes serving on University of Minnesota Duluth’s Labovitz School of Business and Economics Dean’s Business Advisory Council and the Minnesota Chamber of Commerce Diversity, Equity and Inclusion Steering Committee.

“Nicole has helped develop and execute Allete’s strategic vision across all of our companies while fostering a strong, values-based culture,” Allete chair, president and CEO Bethany Owen said in a news release.

Allete Clean Energy has grown to be Allete’s second-largest company under its current president, Al Rudeck, who will take on the newly created role of Allete safety and external affairs officer. His new role will be responsible for and oversee the company's safety and government affairs areas. Before becoming president in 2016, Rudeck was Minnesota Power vice president of strategy and planning.

Rudeck serves on the Minnesota Chamber Board of Commerce; the Lignite Energy Council; the University of Minnesota Duluth/Natural Resources Research Institute Advisory Board; and several other boards.

Minnesota Power chief operating officer since 2020, Josh Skelton will assume an expanded leadership role as an elected Allete vice president. In addition to overseeing Minnesota Power’s strategy and planning, transmission, distribution and generation operations, he will supervise regulatory affairs.

Since Skelton joined the company as an intern in 1999, he has worked as facility engineer, technical superintendent and business unit manager at Minnesota Power generating facilities, general manager and vice president of Generation Operations. He serves on the Grand Rapids Community Foundation and Minnesota Safety Council.

Brielle Bredsten is the business reporter for the Duluth News Tribune.

She earned a bachelor's degree in Professional Writing & Technical Communication, with minors in Advertising and Creative Writing from Metropolitan State University, in addition to a two-year professional paid internship as reporter/editor of the student newspaper.

She is an award-winning professional writer, photographer and editor based in rural Minnesota. Over the past decade, Brielle Bredsten has contributed more than 1,000 articles, feature stories, non-profit press-releases, photographs and columns. Her work has been published in several community newspapers.
