The former Casey's Gourmet Baking Shoppe, across from Cloquet City Hall on 14th Street, is being converted into a CBD store, North Country Comfort.
The retailer will sell products containing cannabidiol, commonly called "CBD." It is a cannabis extract, but it doesn't produce effects such as a "high" like tetrahydrocannabinol (THC).
Dan Shofner purchased the empty building April 16 and began work on the inside. With the interior nearing completion, Shofner is beginning on the outside of the building this week by laying new stone over the chipping and peeling walls.
Shofner said the small business will be family operated. Everyone working in the store will be certified and knowledgeable about all of the products.
Shofner, a construction worker by trade, has been using some of the CBD oil products he will be selling in the store. He uses one on his back and says it helps.
"We will be carrying hemp products - not the ones containing THC," Shofner explained. "We will have oils, edibles, dog treats and dog oils as well as lotions and salves."
He claims the benefits of the products are digestive aid and anxiety, joint pain and stiffness relief.
Shofner said he will only sell his products to those age 18 and older. He said they will also sell vape products..
"Some of the products will contain the allowable THC levels, while others will be 100 percent THC-free," Shofner said.
A grand opening is planned for June 29.
