The Carlton County Farmers Market is celebrating its 35th anniversary of bringing fresh local produce and cottage foods to the community. It began in 1983 with a group of enterprising folk working together to bring the farm to your table. How much the world has changed since then! Farmers markets are more important than ever — to the local economy as well as providing a much-needed service. Eating fresh is the best for both nutrition and flavor.
Garden plants of many varieties will be available, many of them heirloom and organic. You can find unique varieties and plants adapted to our growing season. You will find many welcome additions to your home and garden. Lovely canned goods to grace your table, and crafts to tickle your fancy.
Garden harvest is in full swing and gardeners are finding time to be even more precious. Days are getting shorter and there's a little nip to the air in the mornings, reminding us that fall is just around the corner. Filling our own pantries and freezers along with marketing the wonderful produce we provide is definitely consuming work!
The Carlton County Farmers Market will open Saturday, June 6, at our new location in front of Premiere Theatres in Cloquet, and Tuesday, June 9, at Four Seasons Event Center in Carlton. You can expect to find a wonderful selection of plants for your home gardens, including many heirloom and open pollinated varieties. Fresh greens are available by this time, with lettuce, spinach and kale to top the list. Soon to follow will be asparagus, peas, radishes and rhubarb.
