Cloquet's No. 28 became quite famous as a steam dinosaur surviving through the dawn of the diesel age. Her stacks smoked until 1964, but she wasn't done yet. The engine was used on several popular "End of Steam" excursions and rail fans from across the country came to Cloquet to watch the engine in service. Its last duties in Cloquet also included acting as a back-up boiler to heat the engine house on Dunlap Island.

College of St. Scholastica sophomore Brandon Newman of Barnum was named to the Upper Midwest Athletic Conference (UMAC) Men's Basketball First Team Tuesday, Feb. 28. The Barnum High School alumnus becomes the first Saint to be named to the all-conference first team since Brett Tester earned the honor in 2012. The reigning UMAC Freshman of the Year led the Saints in scoring, averaging 16.4 points per game. The 16.4 points is the highest average in a season since Tester in 2011-12 (17.0). Newman also led the team with 76 assists and 32 steals.
Human remains were found Friday in the ruins of a home that burned the previous night along Minnesota Highway 33 north of Cloquet. It was the second fire fatality in the area on Thursday; one person died in a fire earlier in the day in Hermantown. The Thursday night fire destroyed a home and garage at 3912 Highway 33, the St. Louis County Sheriff’s Office said in a news release. Multiple fire departments responded to reports of the home fully engulfed in flames just after 8 p.m. Thursday.

A 54-year-old Hermantown man died after his vehicle collided with a pickup truck near Esko on Thursday afternoon. The Carlton County Sheriff’s Office reported that the man was transported via ambulance from the scene on North Cloquet Road East near Ikola Road to Community Memorial Hospital in Cloquet, where he later died. The man’s name wasn’t released Thursday night pending notification of his family.
“Someone who adopted an animal from our shelter thought so much of her experience that she sought out this opportunity to nominate us,” said Parmeter. “That’s as good as it gets!”
“Christmas trees, like yard waste, are banned from landfills in Minnesota. Dispose of your trees properly by bringing them to a conveniently located Treecycling site,” said Karola Dalen, Carlton County resource and recycling coordinator, adding that collected trees can be reused as fuel or mulch.
Only two Cloquet players scored in the girls game: junior center Carmen Foss put up 18 points and speedy sophomore guard Kendra Kelly scored 13, including three 3-point shots. The Lumberjacks girls team ultimately fell to Hermantown 58-31.
