If you don't recognize a good portion of the Cloquet-Esko-Carlton boys hockey program when it takes the ice for Friday night's season opening game against New Prague, you won't be alone. The top five scorers from last year's team are gone, lost to either graduation or junior hockey, taking 85 goals and 210 points from last season with them. Top scorer Westin Michaud (26 goals, 31 assists, 57 points), senior-to-be Karson Kuhlman (25 goals, 22 assists, 47 points) and Dylan Michaud (4/7/11) are gone to play junior hockey.
The Lake Superior Conference announces the following Cloquet athletes have been named to the Football All Conference Team: All-Conference Team - Senior Maxx Brenner, quarterback; senior Jeff Sarkala, offensive lineman; senior Treavor Lowther, defensive lineman; senior Austin Gotchnik, running back; and junior Nick Niemi, tight end. Barb Soukkala has been around volleyball so long that when she began playing in 1972, her uniform included a turtleneck. Perhaps a little outdated in today's game, there's nothing unfashionable about Soukkala's career in the sport. Recently capping her 20th varsity season coaching at Carlton -- and 36th overall -- with a trip to the Class A state tournament, Soukkala was most flattered when her fans, friends and family members surprised and honored her in October. Prepare to be transported to the streets of 19th century England, as you watch the exploits and adventures of the young orphan boy, Oliver Twist, on the Cloquet High School stage this Thursday, Nov. 21, through Sunday, Nov. 24. Music and lyrics for the stage adaptation were written by Lionel Bart. The play is directed by Kevin Hamre and features a large cast of student actors. "We are thrilled to bring the community together for this play," said Hamre. "We have several veteran high school actors, as well as several students who are new to the stage, ranging in age from 9 to 18.
