The Minnesota Department of Transportation announced details of its 2013 state highway construction program today. Included in the list are 34 new or continued projects in District 1, which covers Northeastern Minnesota. "This will be another big year for road construction in Northeastern Minnesota," District 1 Engineer Duane Hill said.
The former Willow River city clerk will make her first court appearance next week on a charge that she stole more than $167,000 from the city to support a gambling problem. Mary Angela Leonard, 56, was charged earlier this month with a single felony count of theft by swindle. According to court documents, the swindle was discovered after Northview Bank informed the city Aug. 13 that Leonard was cashing multiple city checks written to her. A 24-year-old Carlton man is in custody after allegedly robbing a Carlton liquor store at knifepoint on Saturday night. A clerk at Tall Pines Liquor reported being robbed at knifepoint by a man at 9:58 p.m. Saturday night, according to a news release issued by the Carlton County Sheriff's Office. The suspect fled the store with an undisclosed sum of cash. Deputies responded and arrested the suspect at a local residence without incident after a brief investigation.
