Strong storms moved across parts of the Northland on Monday night and early Tuesday morning, bringing torrential rainfall to some areas and prompting several tornado warnings. The tornado warnings -- for the Cable and Seeley areas in Northwestern Wisconsin, and in areas west and southeast of Brainerd -- were based on radar-indicated rotation in storms; there was no immediate confirmation of any tornado touchdowns.
Four adults and a juvenile were arrested late Wednesday after police said they stole money from clerks at the Lemon Tree Liquor Store on Minnesota Highway 33 in Cloquet. According to Cloquet police, clerks at the store called 911 just after 10 p.m. saying two males and a female entered the store and tried to grab cash from the clerks as they were closing the store.
Alex Bacon hit a three-run home run for the second straight game to lead the Madison Mallards to a 10-7 victory over the Duluth Huskies in Game 1 of the Northwoods League championship series on Thursday night before 2,117 at Warner Park in Madison. The loss snapped the Huskies' nine-game winning streak and leaves them needing two straight home victories to capture their first Northwoods League title. Game 2 is 6:35 p.m.
Lane closures and detours along Interstate 35 between Scanlon and Boundary Avenue in Duluth are set to change this week. Thursday through Friday, traffic in both directions will be switched to the newly constructed northbound lanes. Motorists will be restricted to a single lane in each direction on the northbound lanes while the southbound lanes are being reconstructed. The project is expected to be completed in mid-October. All but two ramps at the County Road 61 and Midway Road interchanges will be open to traffic.
It took him nearly 13 years to admit it, but before a full St. Louis County courtroom, Joseph John Couture testified today that he beat and stabbed Trina Louise Langenbrunner to death on Sept. 3, 2000. Couture, 42, of Cloquet pleaded guilty to intentional second-degree murder, first-degree aiding and abetting aggravated witness tampering, and aiding and abetting first-degree arson. Carter Northey went 4-for-5 with two doubles and four RBIs as the Esko Nitro team, representing Minnesota, powered its way to a 14-9 victory over West Portage (Mich.) in a winner's bracket game at the Intermediate Little League Central Regional Tournament on Wednesday in Kalamazoo, Mich. The game pitted the last remaining unbeaten teams in the double-elimination tournament. Esko is off until the championship game at 2 p.m. Friday, when they will play the winner of today's game pitting West Portage and Georgetown (Jenison, Mich).
The victim of a fatal two-vehicle accident that occurred in Carlton County on Friday has been identified. Todd Richard Nelson, 44, of Carlton was pronounced dead at the scene of the crash that was reported about 1:35 p.m. at the intersection of County Roads 4 and 5 in Blackhoof Township, the Carlton County Sheriff's Office said. The driver of the other vehicle, Randall Fred Palmi, 42, of Barnum was taken by ambulance to Essentia Health-St.
The Esko Little League Intermediates team has advanced to the Central Region Tournament this weekend in Kalamazoo, Mich. The team advanced through district and state play to represent Minnesota in the tournament that runs Saturday through next Friday. If Esko wins the regional, it would play in the Little League World Series in Livermore, Calif. The Little League International 50/70 league is for players ages 13. The 50 feet represents the pitching distance and 70 feet represents the base path distance.
After a three-year run coaching in the Superior International Junior Hockey League, former Minnesota Duluth defenseman Rod Aldoff is moving on to the professional ranks. Aldoff, 42, who coached the Wisconsin and Minnesota Wilderness to a 145-15-8 record and three SIJHL championships, has accepted the head coaching position with the Pensacola Ice Flyers of the Southern Professional Hockey League. Pensacola is the defending league champion. The Wilderness also won the Dudley-Hewitt Cup this past season and earned a semifinal berth in the RBC Cup Canadian National Jr.
There'll be beer at Bayfront Festival Park today during the All Pints North Summer Brew Fest, but Cloquet will have its fair share, too. The 13th annual Beer Collector Trade Show takes over the Northeastern Saloon & Hotel, 115 St. Louis Ave., from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. with setup beginning at 8 a.m. Admission is free. The rain-or-shine show has room inside if the weather doesn't cooperate, but don't worry about being confined to the indoors if the weather's nice.
