Adam Laine and Aaron Johnson had 24 points apiece to lead host Cloquet to a 68-61 victory over Esko on Monday night in high school boys basketball. Dillon Johnson added 11 points for the Lumberjacks (13-8). Casey Staniger had 23 points and Kory Deadrick added 17 points for the Eskomos (17-4), the News Tribune's top-ranked small-school boys basketball team. Laine had 15 points in Cloquet's 81-42 home victory over North Branch on Saturday to top 1,000 points for his career.
The Cloquet Police Department is advising no travel in the city unless absolutely necessary because of this afternoon's heavy snow. Plowing in the city will begin at 4 a.m. Monday, the department said in an online alert. The department reminded residents of Cloquet and Scanlon that seasonal parking rules are in effect; vehicles left on city streets overnight will be ticketed and towed.
A good, old-fashioned winter storm is taking aim at the Northland, with 6 to 12 inches of snow expected for much of the region starting Sunday. The National Weather Service in Duluth has issued a winter storm watch for Sunday into Monday for the entire region, with strong easterly winds expected to whip the snow around, covering roads and reducing visibility. Snow is expected to start in earnest in the Twin Ports by about noon on Sunday, ending by about noon on Monday, with the heaviest snow Sunday evening.

The Flood Homes With Hope coalition is offering free carbon monoxide detectors to residents whose homes suffered damage in last summer's flash floods. Officials have noted that many residents with homes that suffered water damage are reporting problems with their furnaces and boilers, which could lead to deadly carbon monoxide buildup.
