Flooding caused washouts and road closures in Carlton County on Sunday as a series of storms brought heavy rainfall across the area over the weekend.

Traveling to the Twin Ports VA Clinic to see a doctor can be difficult for veterans living in rural Carlton County, county Veterans Service Officer Duane Brownie told U.S. Sen. Amy Klobuchar. Problems with the Veterans Choice Program, which allows veterans to use private health care if they live more than 40 miles from a VA clinic, and issues with funding and benefits for the National Guard and Reserves were among the issues that Klobuchar heard about during a panel discussion Saturday. About 70 people attended the discussion at VFW Post 3979 in Cloquet.
Authorities have identified the driver who died when his semi truck crashed into the St. Louis River amid snowy conditions early Friday morning. The Minnesota State Patrol reported that Christopher Michael Lucia, 44, of Duluth was killed when his truck crashed at about 4:41 a.m. Friday after sliding off the northbound lane of I-35 and into the St. Louis River at Scanlon just before the bridge over the river.
