Many years ago my mom and dad went shopping in Cloquet and after a while my dad must have gotten tired, so he went to wait in the car. This was long before cell phones.
How thick should the ice be before going out on it? Walking: 3 to 4 inches; passenger car: 7-8 inches; light truck: 9 inches; medium to heavy truck: 10-12 inches. And remember that slush ice has only half the strength of blue ice. And river ice can be very dangerous to go on since it has varying thicknesses depending on the flow of the water in the river. Check with a local expert about ice safety.
That’s all the news from Lake Memphremagog. It is between the U.S. state of Vermont and the city of Quebec in Canada. It’s the third deepest lake in Vermont and contains 20 islands, the largest of which (Province Island) is divided by the international border.
Thought I’d end this column with some real unusual or funny names of lakes. Here’s the first one: That’s all the news from Lake Chaubunagungamaug. This real lake is located in Webster, Mass., near the Connecticut border, and sometimes goes by “Webster Lake.”
Keep your seat warm! Don't sit on the cold bleachers at the next football game — heavy duty canvas and metal stadium seats are for sale from the Junior class. These seats are black with “Cromwell-Wright Cardinals” embroidered on them. They will be great for the upcoming basketball season also. Cost is $45.
I’ll leave you with the following message for our veterans: Feeling gratitude today and every day for the veterans who have so bravely served our country.
The last Senior Dance for 2016 will be held from 1-4 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 27, with the Marie Ojala Band at the Cromwell Park Pavilion. Everyone is welcome. There will be a Bible Camp “Pig Roast” fundraiser from 5-7 p.m. Friday, Oct. 28, at Bethlehem Church. Contact Liz Kabus for more information at 218-428-6733.
Don’t forget that Daylight Savings time ends Sunday, Nov. 6, by turning our clocks back one hour. Sure will be dark in the morning and evenings then. There will be a Veterans Day program at 10 a.m. Friday, Nov. 11, at Villa Vista.
What do the Minnesota Vikings and the Cromwell-Wright Cardinals football teams have in common? They are both undefeated. Sure has been fun following these teams this fall — it almost makes the coming winter seem bearable.
There are only four weeks left before the Presidential election. It will be interesting how much worse these campaigns get, but don’t get caught up in all the mud slinging. However, there are lots of other folks running for election who also need our support. Check out the area newspapers for a copy of the upcoming ballot. We vote by mail, but for those of you who have to go to the polls, it’s good to have an idea who’s running for what office.
