CEC boys drop season opener
Contrary to popular opinion, there is a spring sport underway in Cloquet.
The Cloquet-Esko-Carlton boys' tennis team, bereft of practice opportunities due to the snow, made its season debut anyway in the covered environment of Virginia's indoor tennis center Tuesday, April 10.
CEC lost 4-3 to Eveleth-Gilbert, but two of the lost matches went to three sets.
Peter Tomhave earned the No. 1 singles spot and won the first set against the Golden Bears' Rob Licari by 7-5 before dropping the second and third sets by 6-3, 6-1.
Dennis Genereau had little difficulty with Eveleth-Gilbert's Noah Sanders, winning in straight sets by 6-4, 6-4.
Kade Bender played third singles and after losing the first set to Jared Delich, won the next two by 6-1, 6-1 for a team point.
Cal Pertler split the first two sets against Easton Young at fourth singles before falling 6-2 in the third and deciding set.
In doubles, the No. 3 team of Bryan Broten and Christian Loeb won in straight sets over Nathan Tassoni and Blaine Mortensen. Scores were 6-3, 7-6 (7-5).
But the home team took the match with wins at first and second doubles. Ryan Frederickson and Harlan Foster played first doubles for CEC, while Drew Deosken and Luke Lamirande teamed at second doubles, but both teams lost in straight sets.
