BAYSIDE CHATTER: Football awards given

The Mariners had their end of the season football banquet on Sunday to celebrate a 2011 season which had an unexpected magical run to the state tournament that uplifted the program, school, and community. The team also announced their end of the season awards.

The top freshman was Jordan Fralich. Sophomore Chad Smuk was the top defensive lineman and senior Baruch Fischer was the top offensive lineman. Junior Kyle Blood was the top receiver and senior Holden Panetti was the top rusher. The Co-MVPs were senior QB/DB Luke Thun and senior RB/LB Holden Panetti. Coach Ward Kaiser was named Section 5 coach of the year. Named to the Big North All Conference football team were Luke Thun, Holden Panetti, Baruch Fischer, and Kyle Blood. Receiving honorable mention were Jordan Fralich and Chad Smuk. Panetti also received honorable mention to the AP All State team.

Along with this I thought I would also list the team awards given out to the 2011 baseball and softball teams as the spring sports get overlooked for this sort of thing a lot of times. In baseball senior Warren Carter was the top defensive player. The top hitter and top offensive player went to freshman infielder Luke Small. The rookie of the year and most improved player was freshman infielder Jonah Koehler. Senior pitcher Ryan DeShaw was the team MVP. In softball junior Marina Carter was the best offensive player and junior Katie Smedstad was the top defensive player. Junior Shay Viola was the most improved player and freshman infielder Phoenix Lillis was the rookie of the year. Junior pitcher/shortstop Taylor Guzzo was the team MVP.

Mariners basketball

Congratulations to senior Luke Thun who went over the 1,000 point mark in his Mariner basketball career in the Mariner's opening season 64-29 victory over Mesabi Academy. He had 27 points in the game. Tonight the boys' basketball team hosts Esko, Cherry on Monday and Two Harbors on Thursday. The girls also host Esko tonite.

Hockey at home

Both the boys and girls hockey teams are at home tomorrow afternoon for games. The boys host Pine City at 1 p.m. and the girls host Section 7A favorite Chisago Lakes right after that. On Thursday the girls are at Moose Lake and the boys are at Ashland.

Hockey history

The Mariner record for fastest three goals by the boys is 31 seconds against Mesabi East by Eric Berquist, Andy Martinson and Tom Christensen, which was achieved Dec. 21, 1999. Rob Kelly and Kevin Stebbins scored three short-handed goals 35 seconds apart against Proctor on Jan. 25, 1983. John Dumais scored three goals in 35 seconds against Hermantown on Feb. 16, 1970, in a playoff game, which is still a state record.
