STATE BASKETBALL UPDATE: Fond du Lac leads at halftime

MINNEAPOLIS — Playing in their tiny tribal school’s first-ever state boys basketball state tournament today, Fond du Lac Ojibwe has outrun Canby to a 36-29 halftime lead in a Class A quarterfinal at the University of Minnesota’s Williams Arena in Minneapolis, Minn.

The fifth-seeded Ogichidaa (23-3) opened the historic game missing their first four shots until lone senior Trevontae Brown rolled in a left-side runner to explode a hefty Fond du Lac crowd. The Ogichidaa took the lead for good at 17-15 on a Bruce Martineau fastbreak layup.

By halftime — centered around a dominating flag song performed by Fond du Lac Ojibwe members — Dexter Delille leads the Ogichidaa with 11 points, while both Brown and Davontae Williamson each have nine.

The fourth-seeded Lancers (25-4), led by Josh Gallegos’ 12 points and Michael Slaba’s 9, have won 12 games straight, but don’t want to run with the Ogichidaa.
