Sundbom rallies, wins second Cloquet Invitational via playoff
Pike Lake's Taylor Sundbom beat Lee Kolquist on the third playoff hole Sunday to win the 86th Annual Cloquet Invitational at Cloquet Country Club.
Sundbom entered the final round Sunday in seventh place. He was 10 strokes back of the leader, Cloquet's John Sheff, and six back of Kolquist, who was alone in second.
Sheff, who has finished second or lost in a playoff at his home course's signature event an incredible 13 times, took a four-shot lead over Kolquist into Sunday's third and final round after shooting a 1-over-par 71-72—143.
However, it was not time for Sheff to break his curse yet.
Sundbom shot a 1-under-par 70 in Sunday's rainy final round to leap past six players. That included Sheff, who shot a 10-over 81 on Sunday to take third place.
Sheff finished one shot out of the playoff. Kolquist carded a 5-over 76 to force the playoff as both he and Sundbom finished the three-day tournament at 10-over.
Sunday was Sundbom's second Cloquet Invitational title with the first coming in 2015 when he beat Alex Kolquist by two strokes. Sundbom won the Reidar Lund Skyline Memorial Tournament two weeks at Enger Park Golf Course in Duluth.
A day after winning the Cloquet Invitational, Sundbom qualified for the 2017 U.S. Amateur at Southern California's Riviera and Bel-Air country clubs Aug. 14-20.
