Moose Lake wins thriller to reach state
Moose Lake is taking its 13-18 record to the American Legion Division II state tournament.
The 2015 Eighth District champs defended their title by rallying past Proctor 12-10 on Sunday, July 24, in Ely. They scored five runs in the bottom of the fifth, highlighted by Wyatt Lampel’s grand slam, to forge an 8-8 deadlock, which Proctor’s John Aase snapped via a solo home run in the seventh. Proctor added one more before the frame was through to jump ahead 10-8, but left the bases loaded.
Moose Lake capitalized when Charlie Adamczak smacked a two-run homer to left field in the bottom of the seventh, and Rex Janke clobbered a two-run blast of his own to left-center for a thrilling finish.
Hunter Halverson earned the pitching win, while Aase took the loss for Proctor (13-6), which needed to win twice after emerging from the loser’s bracket.
Moose Lake opens state tournament play at 11:45 a.m. Friday against St. Charles Lake. The 30th Annual Division II Minnesota State American Legion Baseball Championship Tournament is being hosted by LeSueur-Henderson, Friday through Sunday, July 29-31.
The 2016 state champion and runner up will advance to the Division II regional in Waupun, Wis.
