Today's prep football games

Duluth East (2-3) at Grand Rapids (2-2)

What: Nonconference game

When: 7 p.m.

Outlook: The Greyhounds knocked off their second Twin Cities opponent with a 53-14 victory over Minneapolis North last Friday at Public Schools Stadium. QB Alex Toscano threw for 81 yards and two touchdowns and ran for 55 yards and two more scores. The junior has 465 yards passing, 359 yards rushing and a combined 10 TDs. RB Quinton Coleman (36 carries, 308 yards, 6 TDs) had 120 all-purpose yards and two TDs vs. North. Sophomore Vitaliy Hancharou has made a team-high 75 tackles. East won 14-8 in its previous trip to Grand Rapids in 2009 but lost 40-0 last season as part of a 13-game losing streak that was snapped earlier this year. ... After a pair of one-point victories the previous two games, the Thunderhawks gave top-ranked Glencoe-Silver Lake its toughest battle of the season in a 22-14 loss. The five-time state-champion Panthers ran for 296 yards, including 126 from Tony Mizuhata. QB Austin Pohlen kept the Thunderhawks close by throwing for 140 yards and two TDs and rushing for another 90 yards. WR Patrick Flaherty caught six passes for 86 yards and both scores.

Moose Lake-WR (4-o, 1-0) at Deer River (5-0, 1-0)

What: Great Polar White game

When: 7 p.m.

Outlook: The second-ranked Rebels routed Duluth Denfeld 53-6 for their 42nd consecutive regular-season win, a streak that began after a 15-0 loss to Deer River on Sept. 8, 2006. They also have posted 29 straight road victories, a streak that dates to a one-point loss to Esko on Sept. 10, 2004. RBs Chris Gassert (12-197, 4 TDs) and Jake Disterhaupt (13-156, 3 TDs) were the stars of the Denfeld game. Disterhaupt has more than 600 yards rushing for the season and averages nearly 14 yards per carry. ... The ninth-ranked Warriors downed Two Harbors 38-20 on Saturday behind RB Damon Benham's TD runs of 1, 33 and 34 yards and a 25-yard scoring pass. Deer River is averaging 42.4 points per game, but must find a way to stop a Rebels offense scoring at a 55-points-per-game clip. MLWR won 47-0 and 37-0 in two meetings last season and has beaten Deer River eight straight times since that 2006 loss -- including four in the playoffs -- by a combined score of 296-68.
