Nordic girls defend conference crown

Meanwhile, last Friday, the CEC Nordic girls ski team defended their Lake Superior Conference championship at Pincushion Trail in Grand Marais.

The Lumberjacks finished with 307 total points, while

Hermantown-Proctor was the nearest competitor at 294 of the four participating teams. The CEC boys finished fourth; Duluth Marshall won.

Esko's Molly Meysembourg, Korbyn Danielson and Carlton's Erika Fox went 3, 4 and 5, while Cloquet senior Alyssa Michaelson placed seventh, earning All-Conference honors for the defending LSC champs. Esko's Matt Rengo also received conference honors in his 10th-place boys finish last week.

"Alyssa beat out a couple skiers in the last 20 yards or so; it was quite exciting," said CEC Coach Les Martin. "Everyone really did their part. It was pretty close, but it worked out, really."

The Lumberjacks will race in the Section 7 meet Thursday at Giants Ridge. The boys freestyle race begins at 10 a.m., girls start at 11 a.m., with the pursuit events to follow in the afternoon.

"There are always a lot of good skiers in this area," Martin said, noting Section 7 has sported the 2010 boys individual champion (CEC's Raleigh Goessling), the 2010 boys team champions (Ely) and both the 2011 boys and girls team champions (Duluth East). "Getting out of here is always tough."
