Scanlon is wasting taxpayers' money

The City of Scanlon Council just made another decision to waste taxpayers’ money.

In January they decided to split the clerk/treasurer job as the former clerk said it would save the city from having to do an audit every year. Instead they could just have the audit done every three years.

One council person wanted to hire the former clerk, which they did at another council meeting.  This person will be paid $18/hour for 8 hours a week for 52 weeks a year. With the city’s share of social security, this comes to $8,060 a year and does not include work comp insurance or unemployment tax. The yearly audit runs from $7,000 to $9,000 a year. To have a three-year audit done, it will cost more than the $9,000 — more like $12,000 to $15,000 as they will have to look at the three years. Paying someone for the treasurer’s job for three years adds up to $24,180. We have a clerk and part-time employee that could still be doing this at their current pay with no increase in wages.

I think it’s time for more citizens to come to meeting and maybe start to get the pros and cons of merging with Cloquet when our council can’t see they are making decisions that are not savings us money.
