Congratulations to Brianna House and Ross Arnold on their Aug. 12 wedding in the backyard of his parents, Mary Jo and Tom Borglund, on Cromwell Lake. A reception was held later at the Cromwell Park Pavilion.

A beautiful wedding reception was held for Tayiah LaRae Hanson and Asloob Sabir Palakkal Alias Makkintepurackal (aka "Achu") Sunday, Aug. 13, at the Wright Senior Center. Friends and family from near and far came to help them celebrate their marriage, which took place April 14 in Duluth. Achu is from India. They are presently living with us and she is the daughter of Garrie Hanson and Brenda Jenkins.

Karen Nikko wants to thank the Class of 1961 for the lovely plant. Her classmates met over Wrong Days weekend and also want to wish her well.

The Farmer's Co-op Store in Wright held their 98th annual meeting at the Wright Senior Center Tuesday, Aug. 8, with 27 members in attendance. The membership voted unanimously to change the number of board members from seven back to five as it was in 2014. The present board members were all re-elected: Susan Carr, George Uecker, Beanie Randa, Jennie K. Hanson and Scott Ferry. The board of directors meets at 6 p.m. on the third Tuesday of the month at the store unless otherwise advertised.

Members of Prairie Lake Township will hold their annual Picnic/Potluck from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 19, at Prairie Lake Town Hall, 3693 Jones Road. Burgers, brats, hot dogs, chips, relishes, pop, coffee, and water will be furnished. If you wish to bring a dish to pass, it will be certainly welcomed.

The Carlton County Historical Society will offer a Barn Quilt Square class from 1-4 p.m. Sunday, Aug. 20, at the Farm Machinery Building during the Carlton County Fair in Barnum. Participants will make a wooden painted barn quilt square to take home, suitable for hanging indoors or outdoors. All supplies will be included in the $25 class fee. The class is limited to the first eight people to sign up. Help the Carlton County Historical Society's Barn Photo Committee preserve the images and beauty of barns in Carlton County! Monday, Aug. 21, is the total eclipse of the sun. We will not be able to see the total eclipse, but the sun will be 76 percent covered where we are, unless it's too cloudy, but even if it is cloudy, the sky will darken. The total solar eclipse of June 8, 1918 crossed the United States from Washington state to Florida and was the last time it totally crossed the nation from the Pacific to the Atlantic.

The Area Clothing Depot in Cromwell will hold a special School "Bag Sale" (two bags for $5) Aug. 22, 24, 26, 29, 31 and Sept. 2. It is open from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.

The Lakehead Harvest Reunion will be held August 25-27 at 70 E. St. Louis River Road, Esko. There are so many activities to take part in. Come and see all the old steam powered tractors, etc! They are quite a sight and a wonderful way to learn about the past.

The YOT Senior Dance will be held from 1-4 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 24, at the Pavilion in Cromwell.

There will be a special "Therapy Dogs" presentation and demonstration at the Wright Senior Center at 6 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 6. Stress relief dogs are currently visiting hospitals, schools and retirement homes. Come and learn about them!

The Carnival at Villa Vista and Cardinal Court Carnival will be held from 1-4 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 10, and will feature the Family Pride Talent Show, fish pond, cake walk, bouncy house, face painting, photo booth, hot dogs and popcorn, cotton candy, root beer floats, and bean bag toss.

YOT will meet at noon Tuesday, Sept. 12, at the Pavilion in Cromwell at noon. New members and guests are always welcome.

Our sympathy to the family of Mildred Mary Hakomaki, 91, of Cromwell who passed away Sunday, Aug. 5, 2017. A memorial service was held Aug. 11 at Atkins-Northland Funeral Home, Cloquet.

Our sympathy to the family of Royce K. Mattson, 55, of Mahtowa who passed away Monday, Aug. 7, 2017. A memorial service was held Aug. 12 at Nelson Funeral Care.

Ann Markusen, our local freelance writer, wrote a wonderful article on the 100th anniversary of the Bethlehem Lutheran Church Sanctuary that was published in the Pine Journal (Aug. 10) and Floodwood Forum (Aug. 11). If you haven't seen it, it is worth the trouble getting a copy. Thank you, Ann, for doing this and we look forward to reading many, many more of your articles in the future.

Let the school know about any new families who have moved or are moving into the area with school-age children; they should stop in and get their children registered for the new school year. School resumes Sept. 5. Most families should have received their school information packet by now; if not, stop in and pick one up.

The Carlton County Historical Society has received funding from the Arrowhead Regional Arts Council to publish an original collection of poetry and short prose commemorating the 100th Anniversary of the Fires of 1918. Submissions are requested from individuals who have a personal connection or interest in this chapter of Minnesota history. The deadline is Nov. 1. Submissions can be brought or sent to CCHS at 406 Cloquet Ave., Cloquet, MN 55720 or via email to rmartin@carltoncountyhistory.org. I've written my story and will send it to the CCHS soon.
