Senior, volunteer column: Community Connections

The Retired and Senior Volunteer Program (RSVP) along with its sponsoring organization, Volunteer Services of Carlton County, wishes you and yours a Happy New Year!

With the New Year, we want to share some programs at Volunteer Services designed to provide support for those caring for loved ones. The Family Memory Care Program is a service for caregivers living with a spousal family member with memory loss. Kristine Dwyer, our consultant, is trained to meet with families and assess their situation and talk about any concerns. She then helps educate about memory loss and works with the family to develop a plan of support. If you or someone you know is caring for a spouse with memory loss, please call our office. We can connect you with the appropriate services.

Whether or not you are a caregiver, you may have questions about how long it is safe to stay in your home. The Minnesota Board on Aging has established a website, (, an assessment to help seniors know and understand their risks of staying at home. The Live Well at Home counseling quiz is a seven question rapid screen to help you learn your risks. You can go online and take this yourself or call our office. We have a trained professional who can help administer the quiz and take the next steps to help you stay in your home as long as possible. Both of these programs are funded by ARDC — Arrowhead Area Agency on Aging — as a part of the Older American Act Program under an area plan approved by the Minnesota Board on Aging.

As you age, there are people who can care for you as you care for a loved one. You are not alone and we want to help you with any transitions.
