Edward M. Ballman, age 88 of Cloquet, passed away Tuesday, May 8, 2018 at St. Luke's Hospital in Duluth. He was born June 15, 1929 in St. Paul, the son of Edward C. and Louise (Foeltz) Ballman. Ed was raised primarily in northeast Minneapolis and graduated from Edison High School. He attended the University of Minnesota and graduated in 1952 with Bachelor of Science degree in Forest Management, with a minor in fisheries management. After serving in the U.S. Army from 1952-1954, he was employed in various locations in northern Minnesota, primarily in Hubbard County.
Ed married Helen Anderson on November 16, 1957 and they made their home in Park Rapids. A transfer to the Minnesota DNR-Forestry was made in 1961 to St. Cloud and later to Big Sandy Lake at McGregor. He accepted employment with Diamond International in Cloquet in March 1966 where he worked as Wood Procurement Forester and as Chief Forester. Employment was accepted at Potlatch Corporation in 1979 as the Cloquet Area Woodlands manager where he was employed until retirement in 1992. Ed enjoyed working outdoors and was an avid fisherman and hunter and enjoyed gardening and traveling. He was a longtime faithful member of Zion Lutheran Church, Kiwanis International and the Society of American Foresters.
Ed was preceded in death by his parents; and his wife, Helen. He is survived by two sons, Edward (Karen Sorensen) Ballman and David (Lerma) Ballman; daughter, Elaine Ballman; four grandchildren, Alexis, Emma, Dawson, and Dustin; one sister, Phyllis Patch; one niece, Johanna; and one nephew, Bruce.
Visitation will be Saturday, June 23, 2018 from 10:00 a.m. until the 11:00 a.m. memorial service at Zion Lutheran Church in Cloquet. A luncheon and time of fellowship will follow in the church social hall. See the family online guest book at www.nelsonfuneralcare.net.
