Henry "Hank" Joseph Tillman Sr.

Henry "Hank" Joseph Tillman, Sr. of Esko, MN passed away Thursday, October 19, 2017 in his home surrounded by wife and loving family at the age of 98. He was born in Little Falls, MN on June 12, 1919 to Michael and Martha (Zyvolowski) Tillman. He moved to Cloquet at the age of three.

Henry was a hero not only during WWII but also on February 1934; he saved two boys lives while serving as a school patrol. He was in the C.C.C. Camps in Grand Marais Northern Lights Co. 721 and Gooseberry Co. 2710 from 1938 - March 1940. He served in the US Army 3rd Division from October 1940 to June 23, 1945. While serving his time, he was in the European Theater during World War II.

Henry married Norma Seguin on June 29, 1946 and they made their home in Esko. He was employed at Potlach for 37 years retiring in 1981; he belonged to the Quarter Century Club and was a member of Union Local 780. Later he went to work for the Town of Thompson.

Henry had a love of old cars and enjoyed many car shows with his wife with their 1939 Chevy Master Deluxe Esmerelda. He was a lifetime member of the VFW, DAV, and M.O.P.H. and was a member of the American Legion for 69 years.

Henry was preceded in death by his parents; infant brother, Edwin; brother, Leonard; sister, Florence; sisters-in-law, Barb, Dorothy, and Cathy; brothers-in-law, Jack and Donald; infant daughter, daughter-in-law, Shirley; sons-in-law Carl and Larry; and great-grandson Caleb. He is survived by his loving wife, Norma of 71 years; his children, Elaine (Dick) Poukka, Hetty MacMillan, Mary Vance, Mike Tillman and Nila Freeman, Cherrie (Matt) Hautajarvi, Becky (Dan) Kershner, Henry (Karla) Tillman, Jr., and Sarah (Mike) Soyring; 20 grandchildren; 27 great-grandchildren with one on the way due in December; five great-great-grandchildren; his brother, Alvin Tillman; sister, Esther (Leland) Johnson; sisters-in-law, Carol (Jim) Sasse and Bonnie (Mike) Hatfield; and numerous nieces and nephews.

The family wishes to thank a very special angel, Rita Maki for the excellent care given over the last two years and also to Kevin Tillman, Nila Freeman and his daughter, Hetty for helping in his care over the last year.

A Memorial gathering will be held from 10:00 AM until the 12:00 Noon Memorial Service Saturday, October 28, 2017 in Nelson Funeral Care. Military Honors conducted by the Cloquet Combined Honor Guard.
