Grace Darlene Caffey

Grace Darlene Caffey, 92 of Cloquet, peacefully slipped away from us and into the loving arms of Jesus on October 12, 2017.

She was born in 1925 in Pukwana, South Dakota to John D. Sweeting age 61, and Rose Wood Sweeting who was blind. She was the youngest of four siblings, all legally blind. Encouraged by Doris Jones, a shop-keeper in town, Grace attended RN training at the Methodist State Hospital in Mitchell, South Dakota.

Grace was married to Fred Robert Newlon in 1947 and lived happily in Cloquet until his untimely death in 1959. She married Wilford B. Caffey a year later.

During her nursing career, she served the last 35 years as Head Nurse of Obstetrics and Nursery at the Cloquet Community Memorial Hospital.

She loved dancing, gardening, cooking and entertaining. Many happy hours were spent at the cabin - land which she purchased in 1958 for her beloved husband.

Grace was a loving, caring, nurturing woman, full of kindness and compassion for others. She delighted in her family and showered them with her wisdom, wit and generosity of spirit. She lived with dignity and independence, a clear mind and a strong voice. She held to a firm Christian faith and was a member of Our Savior's Lutheran Church. She set an example to us all and will be greatly missed.

Grace was preceded in death by her parents; husbands, Fred Newlon and Wilford Caffey; her son, John Robert Newlon; brothers, Osa, Lester and John Sweeting; and sister, Johannah Moter.

She is survived by her daughter, Cynthia Newlon (Fred) Soberg of Pittsburgh; daughter-in-law, Linda Newlon of Cloquet; six grandchildren, Jonathan Soberg of Palo Alto, CA, David Soberg of Pittsburgh, Joshua Soberg of Jensen Beach, FL, Nathanael Soberg of Pittsburgh, Bethany Newlon Leseman and Jacob Newlon both of Cloquet; great granddaughters, Melina and Nadia Soberg of Palo Alto, CA.
