The folks in Moose Lake have the recipe for an “agate stampede” down pat. Step 1: Get hundreds of people of all ages and sizes to line Elm Avenue in downtown Moose Lake. Make sure at least some of them have come prepared with buckets or baskets, spray bottles of water and even rubber gloves. Step 2: Have two dump trucks loaded with rocks plus $400 in coins and 400 pounds of agates dump their contents down the middle of the street. Step 3: Fire the cannon and watch the stampede commence. Make sure they are kind to each other. Finally, clean up rocks once they’ve been picked over by the crowds. Moose Lake celebrated the stampede Saturday afternoon as part of the southern Carlton County town’s 48th annual Agate Days. Tyler Northey/Pine Journal
