Crispy greens and root vegetables are plentiful at the Farmer's Market

July arrived with fanfare and fireworks, including some thunderstorms to quench our increasingly thirsty gardens.

Beautiful lettuces and crispy greens are a staple at the market, with appearances of homegrown mushrooms after rainy spells.

Root vegetables are now becoming available: beautiful beets, crispy carrots, tantalizing turnips and rosy radishes!

And I'm very happy to report that our beloved bread lady, Emma, has returned with a limited quantity of her excellent loaves! She is a co-founder of the Carlton County Farmers Market, and Emma's steadfast support of the market is deeply appreciated by all.

Congratulations go out to Julie Olson of Cloquet, winner of the July drawing. She received a wonderful selection of fresh vegetables, baked and canned goods, and even some pasture raised meat. Be sure to sign up at the market for your chance to win!

Blueberry season is almost upon us, and here is a simple muffin recipe to enjoy these little treasures. Happy gardening!

BLUEBERRY MUFFINS

1 c. sugar

1/2 c. butter

2 eggs

1 c. buttermilk

1 t. vanilla

2 c. flour

1 t. baking soda

1 t. baking powder

1/2 t. salt

1 1/2 c. blueberries, rolled in flour

Cream the butter till light and fluffy. Gradually add sugar, then eggs and vanilla. Sift together dry ingredients and add to batter alternately with buttermilk. Gently fold in blueberries. Fill muffin cups 2/3 full and bake at 375° for 25 minutes until golden brown.
