Farmers Market News
The Carlton County Farmers Market will open Saturday, June 6, at our new location in front of Premiere Theatres in Cloquet, and Tuesday, June 9, at Four Seasons Event Center in Carlton. You can expect to find a wonderful selection of plants for your home gardens, including many heirloom and open pollinated varieties. Fresh greens are available by this time, with lettuce, spinach and kale to top the list. Soon to follow will be asparagus, peas, radishes and rhubarb.
We are hoping that you find our new location to be more convenient for your weekend shopping. The market will also have lots of room to expand, giving you an even wider selection of homemade and homegrown products. The homemade jams and jellies are simply delicious with many unique flavors to try. Fresh breads and baked goods of all kinds are available to tempt you, as well as fresh chicken and eggs. Craft vendors have also found a home at the Carlton County Farmers Market and offer you many useful and creative items, too numerous to list!
Our recipe this week features asparagus and is brought to you courtesy of Ken Hammarlund, who enjoys it with a farm fresh egg on the side.
The market enjoyed a mildly successful season on Tuesdays in Carlton last year, and we are pleased to offer our products again this year. We hope to see this market site grow and become as much a tradition as our location in Cloquet.

RECIPE: Breakfast Asparagus Saute
1/2 c. asparagus, cut into 1-inch pieces
1/2 c. chopped green cabbage
1 T. oil of your choice
1/3 c. cooked black beans
1/3 c. cooked rice
1 T. ricotta cheese (or sour cream)
Saute asparagus and cabbage in oil over a medium heat until tender crisp. Add rice and beans and heat through. Season to taste with salt, pepper and hot sauce. Top with ricotta and enjoy. This is a simple and hearty recipe that is easily doubled.
