The Cloquet School District is sending four Destination ImagiNation teams to State.

Advisor Deb Peterson said the Cloquet Middle School (CMS) Structure team technically tied for first with the Queen of Peace team at the Regional Meet.

“If you’re within three points, they consider it a tie,” Peterson said, noting that the Queen of Peace team did better on the skit and instant challenge parts of the competition, while the CMS team won on structure and weight. “The CMS team was less than one point away.”

The CMS structure team includes eighth-graders Marjorie Larsen, Josh Sutherland, Noah Kolodge and Ethan Matzdorf along with sixth-graders Jake Sutherland and Evan McWilliams.

Cloquet High School is sending a ninth-grade team from the fine arts category of “Laugh Art Loud,” in which they were asked to do a comedy based on a famous artwork. The CHS “What Team?” placed first in their division at Regionals and includes freshmen Reilly White, Marie Osuna and Tray Olson.

Cloquet is also sending two project OUTREACH teams to sSate.

Peterson explained why this year’s OUTREACH challenge was called “Pitch and Play.”

“They all had to come up with an elevator pitch to let people know what they were doing, and they also had to incorporate some type of play activity into the project,” she said.

The CMS team “Kick It Into Gear” — eighth-graders Sam Godbout, Haley Macaulay, Franny Slater, Anna Gunelson, McKenzie Stephenson and Morgan Carlson — held a free mini-Olympics at Pinehurst Park for kids, at the same time launching a drive to collect used sporting goods to donate to kids who can’t afford new equipment.

The CHS OUTREACH “Empower and Beyond” team — Sam Sabyan, Kia Peterson, Faith Green and Sylvie Deters — worked with a group of sixth-grade girls two days a week after school targeting self image and confidence.

“They did activities to help them feel good about themselves and feel more important,” Peterson said.

The state competition is Saturday, April 12, in Champlin Park, Minn.
