Another alleged drug dealer was taken off of the streets as part of a series of sting operations conducted by the Cloquet Police Department and other law enforcement agencies over a several-day period in June.
Corey Wayne Midbon, 48, of Hinckley, Minn., was charged June 20 in Carlton County Sixth District Court with felony first-degree sale of 17 grams or more of cocaine or methamphetamine within a 90-day period. He was also charged with felony possession of 50 grams or more of cocaine or meth.
According to the criminal complaint: On June 17 officers met with an informant who arranged a meeting with Midbon. They decided to meet in a restroom at Black Bear Casino, where the informant would buy a quarter pound of meth for $3,400. The money was marked and given to the informant for the drugs. The informant handed the meth to the officers, who in turn began searching for Midbon. They found him at the slot machines, accompanied by a female who had traveled from the Twin Cities with him. They were both taken into custody and transported to the Cloquet Police Department where Midbon admitted to selling the meth for $3,400. He also admitted that he had used about $600 on gambling after the deal had been made.
The officers reclaimed the marked cash from Midbon. The officers field-weighed the meth at 115 grams, then sent it to the Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension (BCA) for official weight and analysis.
The officers found that Midbon had traveled from the Twin Cities with a third person, Jacob Howard McCabe, 37. When officers found McCabe, they discovered a felony amount of meth and a drug paraphernalia pipe used for smoking meth on his person.
Midbon and McCabe were transported to the Carlton County Law Enforcement Center, where they were booked for the offenses and the items were taken into custody for evidence.
Midbon has several other pending cases in the state, including one from April for felony sale and possession of a controlled substance in Scott County. Also, according to a criminal complaint filed in December 2016, Midbon allegedly dropped two bags of meth in front of law enforcement officers while talking to them in a Menard's parking lot in Hennepin County. The officers also allegedly found additional meth inside his vehicle. The total amount recovered at that time was 279.15 grams.
A criminal complaint on Feb. 14, 2017 tells of another incident in the Twin Cities area. An agent of the Southwest Metro Drug Task Force was contacted by a confidential informant (CI) who said Midbon would sell him meth. The transaction was set up. The officers were aware Midbon's driver's license had been revoked and he had an outstanding felony arrest warrant from Hennepin County. The officers saw Midbon as he was arriving at the meeting place and pulled him over. He was arrested and an Apple Valley canine officer arrived to search Midbon's vehicle for drugs. They discovered 25 pills of Dextroamphetamine Sulfate (a schedule II controlled substance), 33 grams of meth and 8.8 grams of cocaine.
Midbon faces a maximum of 80 years and /or $2 million if found guilty of both local charges. His next court date is July 17, with Judge Leslie Beiers at the Carlton County Courthouse.
McCabe faces a maximum of five years and/or $10,000 if found guilty. His case is pending.
