Drivers survive head-on crash outside Carlton
Both drivers survived a head-on collision on Minnesota Highway 45 on Wednesday between Scanlon and Carlton.
Michelle Henriques, 39, of Carlton, was in fair condition at Essentia Health-St. Mary’s Medical Center in Duluth on Thursday morning. Henriques was traveling north on Highway 45 when she swerved to miss an animal in the roadway, said the Minnesota State Patrol in a news release. Henriques’ Toyota Corolla crossed the centerline and met head-on with a southbound Ford Escape driven by David Gilberg, 64, of Carlton, at about 7:30 p.m.
Gilberg was taken to Community Memorial Hospital in Cloquet with non-life-threatening injuries, said the State Patrol.
Gilberg had tried to swerve to avoid the crash, but Henriques was already in the process of correcting back into her lane, the State Patrol said.
The Carlton County Sheriff’s Office, Cloquet Police Department, and Cloquet and Carlton fire departments also responded to the scene. Both drivers were wearing their seatbelts, the State Patrol said.
