Beware counterfeit $50 bills

A St. Paul man and woman were both charged with counterfeiting money and possession of counterfeit currency after being arrested in Cloquet earlier this month. Chao Vang, 31, and Nou Xiong, 40, were arrested Aug. 7 after Cloquet police officers and Carlton County deputies responded to a report of a female attempting to pass a counterfeit $50 bill at Kwik Trip.

Although the people had left the convenience store, officers managed to locate and stop the car. Xiong was arrested on a warrant and Vang, the driver of the vehicle, was arrested for possession of counterfeit currency. During the search of the vehicle, detectives located items consistent with making and passing counterfeit currency along with drug paraphernalia and other miscellaneous items.

Vang was charged in Carlton County Court Aug. 9 and bail set at $2,000.

Cloquet Police Detective Darrin Berg said the department was reaching out to other agencies along the I-35 corridor that had reported counterfeit money to see if the cases are related.
