Cyclist and van collide near SuperOne

A 60-year-old bicyclist was injured last week when he collided with a van on Big Lake Road near Perkins in Cloquet.

According to the Cloquet Police Department accident report, the van driver, a 47-year-old man, told police he was “creeping forward” from the Super One parking lot at approximately 9:30 p.m. Aug. 9, preparing to turn left on Big Lake Road in the rain.

The van was partially in the traffic lane and the bicyclist hit the front driver’s side quarter panel. The bicyclist was thrown from his bicycle and sustained injuries. The bike rider was not wearing a helmet, and complained of back pain after the accident. He was transported to Community Memorial Hospital in Cloquet.

Neither person was ticketed. The police report noted that the accident was “influenced by weather, darkness and the lack of lights on the bike.”

Cloquet and Fond du Lac officers and Cloquet Area Fire District personnel responded to the accident.
