Reminder: Deadline to file for a 2015 property tax refund is Aug. 15

Homeowners and renters are reminded that if they want to file for a Minnesota property tax refund for 2015, the deadline to do so is Tuesday, Aug. 15. They also are able to file a claim for a property tax refund for 2016; however, the deadline for that isn't until Aug. 15 of next year.

According to the Department of Revenue, more than 850,000 Minnesotans received a total of $645 million in property tax refunds last year. That averaged out to $840 for homeowners and $635 for renters.

To be eligible for a refund, a homeowner must have had a household income of less than $107,930 in 2015. For renters, the income limit in 2015 is $58,490. Forms, instructions and additional eligibility requirements can be found on the Department of Revenue's website: www.revenue.state.mn.us.

Any questions about property tax refunds and eligibility requirements should be directed to the Minnesota Department of Revenue at 651-296-3781 or 800-652-9094.
