A rural Barnum home was considered a total loss after a Monday morning fire, the Carlton County Sheriff’s Office reported.
Heavy smoke was reported in the residence at 4161 County Road 138 just after 7 a.m, and crews found the structure engulfed in flames. No one was home at the time of the fire, but a cat was unaccounted for.
The home was owned by Patrick and LeAnn Poirier, according to a GoFundMe page. Patrick is the brother of Katie Poirier, who was abducted from a Moose Lake convenience store and killed in 1999. The couple has four children, according to the page, which had raised more than $10,000 as of Tuesday afternoon.
The sheriff’s office reported that the State Fire Marshal’s Office was called to the scene to investigate, but said the fire did not appear to be suspicious. The Barnum, Moose Lake and Mahtowa fire departments all were called to the scene.
