Barnum author wins national writing award

Mary Alice Carlson of Barnum has received a national writing award for the personal essays that she writes monthly for The Senior Reporter Magazine. The Senior Reporter received four national awards from the North American Mature Publishers Association (NAMPA). The awards are earned for excellence in senior publications.

The awards were announced at the recent NAMPA national meeting in Buffalo, N.Y., and The Senior Reporter received the following:

First Place -- Personal Essays by Mary Alice Carlson

First Place -- Most Improved Publication 2012 to 2013

Second Place -- Best Use of Photography in a publication

Second Place -- "How to..." Article by Bob Olen for his story on fruit tree planting

NAMPA holds the competition annually and this year it was judged at the University of Missouri School of Journalism.

The Senior Reporter magazine is distributed monthly in northeastern Minnesota and northwestern Wisconsin. The magazine is owned and published by Harbor Centers Inc., a 501(c)3 nonprofit in Duluth that provides senior programming and publishing to assist persons in the second half of life to live as active a life as possible. Burton Laine of Cloquet serves as executive director of Harbor Centers as well as editor of The Senior Reporter.
