Tennis players eliminated in Section play

Three of the four Cloquet-Esko-Carlton entrants in the Section 7AA individual tennis tournament won their first-round matches last Thursday in Duluth, but all team members were eliminated in second-round play.

In singles, fourth seed Breanne Baker defeated Emily Anderson of St. Francis 6-1, 6-0 to move to the second round, but was in turn defeated by fifth seed Madria Lehto of Duluth Denfeld 6-4, 7-6 in the second round.

CEC's other singles entrant, Lora Chalich, defeated Kayley Marschalk of Hibbing-Chisholm 6-0, 6-2 in her first round match. Chalich then fell 7-5, 6-1 to Megan Dulong of Grand Rapids-Greenway.

In doubles, the team of Katrina Smith and Abbey Wangen lost the first set against Rachel Smilanich and Cassandra Butler of Hibbing-Chisholm but roared back to win 5-7, 6-3, 6-0. Smith and Wangen then lost to AnnaGrace Norr and Brynne Hauer of Duluth East 6-1, 6-0 in the second round.

The second doubles team of Arica Sheff and Katelyn Litke lost 6-4, 6-3 in the first round to Janelle Shea and Raini Heyblom of Hibbing-Chisholm.
