Two critically injured in freeway crash

Two young people were in critical condition and another escaped with only minor injuries following an accident on I-35 last Saturday, Sept. 6.

According to the Minnesota State Patrol, a 1997 Acura Integra driven by Mark A. Swenson, 16, of Duluth was traveling northbound at mile marker 225 when the car he was driving spun out of control, leaving the roadway and striking a tree.

State patrol officers responded to the scene, along with Carlton County Sheriff's deputies.

Swenson was transferred to St. Luke's Hospital in Duluth where he was listed in critical condition.

Nicole M. Braun, 15, of Holyoke, a passenger in the vehicle, was transported to St. Mary's Medical Center in Duluth where she, too, was listed in critical condition.

A third passenger in the vehicle, Lucas W. Anderson, 18, of Duluth was treated at Mercy Hospital and Health Care Center in Moose Lake, where he was later released.

The state report indicates all three passengers were wearing seatbelts and no signs of alchol use were detected.
