Head to Moose Lake for Agate Days

Expect a rockin’ good time at the 48th annual Agate Days Saturday and Sunday, July 15-16, in Moose Lake. The weekend kicks off with the Gem & Mineral Show Saturday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Sunday from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. and also includes displays of fossils, minerals, panning for gold and more. Check out the Agate and Rock Identification presentation from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday at the Moose Lake Public Library Community Center. The Moose Lake Chamber (4524 S. Arrowhead Lane) will also have maps of open agate picking pits available.

The popular agate stampede starts at 2 p.m. on Elm Avenue. The stampede mixes 400 pounds of agates and $400 in coins with a whole lot of other rocks which are then dumped onto two whole blocks of downtown by two dump trucks. Smart stampeders bring spray bottles of water, safety glasses and buckets.

Other events Saturday include a Kiwanis Pancake Breakfast from 7:30-11 a.m. at the City Park, Five Sisters 5k Run/Walk at 9 a.m. and a Firemen’s Steak Fry 4-7 p.m. Also Saturday, Art in the Park features 80-plus craft and art vendors in the City Park from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday and includes food and music throughout the day.

The fun continues Sunday with an antique car show from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Moose Lake City Park. The entry fee is $5 with a food shelf donation or $10 without. The Moose Lake State Park & Geological Interpretive Center is free and open both days, no state sticker required.
