What is an operating levy? An operating levy is a method by which school districts can raise additional revenue with voter approval. The revenue raised through an operating levy supplements regular state education funding. Close to 90 percent of the state’s school districts have local levies to support education. The state average for a local levy is $936 per student.
On Nov. 2 voters in the Carlton Public Schools ISD No. 93 have the opportunity to vote on an Operating Levy Referendum. The Carlton School Board made a decision to ask voters to commit to the future of education in the Carlton School District by approving a $1,100-per-pupil-unit (PPU) operating levy referendum.
Independent School District 93 of Carlton will seek to stem an ever-rising tide of staff reductions and program cutbacks by putting an excess levy referendum program before voters on Tuesday, April 20.
Carlton County Commissioners unanimously – though reluctantly – approved an 8.38 percent increase in the proposed 2009 property tax levy on Tuesday.
By law the county must approve a proposed 2009 budget and property tax levy by Sept. 15, though commissioners have until mid-December to alter one or both of them.
