Barb Soukkala has been around volleyball so long that when she began playing in 1972, her uniform included a turtleneck.
Perhaps a little outdated in today’s game, there’s nothing unfashionable about Soukkala’s career in the sport.
The Carlton volleyball team swept McGregor 25-17, 25-15, 25-20 on their way to the Section 7A prep volleyball championship. UPDATE: The Bulldogs lost to No. 2 Minneota (29-3) in today’s (Nov. 7) 3 p.m. Class A state quarterfinal. They play again Friday.
The idea of merging Carlton and Thomson would have shocked the county more than a hundred years ago when the two communities held a heated rivalry. It all goes back to 1857 when Carlton County was formed and the stage coach stop of Twin Lakes became the County Seat.

The first of two public informational meetings regarding a proposed merger of the cities of Thomson and Carlton was slated for Wednesday night at the Thomson City Hall as the Pine Journal went to press.
The Carlton Bulldogs trounced visiting Deer River in a season-opening sweep Tuesday. The 3-0 win — within the steamy Carlton High School gymnasium — was the first since the Bulldogs were disappointedly swept by North Woods in last year’s Section 7A final, one step shy of the state tournament.
